Corruption incident

In 2003 Hong Kong's anti-corruption unit launched an investigation on TVB as a number of people have been bribing the music industry to win awards. Some of the individuals arrested include Juno Mak, and his father, Clement Mak, who was the chairman of CCT Telecom. Probes were launched after murmurings that TV execs, music company bosses & a singer & his father were involved in backroom dealings that gave music awards not according to merit but on personal connections. Juno was booed by the public when accepting the award. Juno, his father and other industry figures including chairman Albert Yeung were arrested at some stage.

Wakin Chau

Wakin Chau is a Hong Kong singer popular in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China. He was known as Emil Chau through the 1980s and 1990s, and by 2000 he reverted to his given name Wakin. As of August 2007, he has released more than 40 albums and held several international concert tours.

Biography

Wakin Chau was born in a rice store owned by his family in Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong. Growing up as the fourth son in his seven-member family, Wakin learned to play the guitar when he was about 13 years old. In 1979, he left for Taipei to major in mathematics at National Taiwan University. During his college years, he sang and played folk songs in local coffee shops. This activity was a tradition among NTU students, and it is how Wakin learned to sing in , which would be key to his future as a music-maker in Taiwan.

Wakin had high hopes to establish a career as a recording artist, and he actively sought out contacts in the music industry. But a persistent lack of interest eventually led him to give up trying to become a performer — instead, he could sign on as an assistant producer at Rock Records, where he wrote marketable pop songs for other artists.

Wakin was later encouraged by Chyi Yu to sing some jingles for commercial advertising spots. One of these tunes was for a car commercial, and it happened to catch the attention of Wakin's boss at Rock, who realized it was the voice of his own assistant producer.

That moment opened the door for Wakin to record and release his first Mandarin album under the Rock Records label in 1987. For a man who had dreamed of performing professionally but had settled on being a record producer, this was a period of particularly good fortune that launched a succession of chart-topping records.

Shortly before his music career took off, Wakin the record producer met an American girl named Constance Woods, whose father was in Taiwan as a Fulbright scholar. Seeming to have plenty in common Wakin and Constance began to date, got engaged and then on 16 November 1986, they married in Taipei. Four months later there was another ceremony with family and friends in the United States of America on 14 March 1987. They have a son named Andrew and a daughter named Anya.

From 1985, Emil Chau — who has been using his given name Wakin since 1999 — has released more than 40 records in , Cantonese and . He has become a prominent name in the music of Taiwan and has fans of all ages not only around Asia but also in North America, Europe and elsewhere. His platinum albums such as ''You Make Me Happy and Sad'' , ''The Flowery Heart'' , ''Music Brings Us Together'' , and ''Emil & Friends'' have won awards in Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Wakin has appeared in a number of films and made guest appearances on TV and radio programs in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan. Alongside his singing career, he is a restaurateur and also is active in international charitable causes, such as kidney disease charities in Singapore, the January 2002 "Take a Deep Breath" concert in Taipei to raise money for local health-care organizations, Beijing's 4th Grand Charity Drive for Children in 2005, and Jackie Chan's all-star concerts in Las Vegas.

Song included "''Dancing Street''" , "''Loving Accident''" , "''Love Me Once Again''," "''Revolt''" , and "''Hugging with Tears''" . Priscilla had a rough 1987, but she rebounded nicely in 1988 with the album 嫻情 1988, and the song "''Silly Girl''" that first confirmed her status as a serious contender in the golden age of Cantopop. "''Silly Girl''" was re-made into a disco-version by a new comer in Hong Kong in 2007.

Priscilla chose to retire in 1989 in order to pursue her degree in psychology at the Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, a promise to her parents that she kept. In her supposed-to-be last album, "''Always Be Your Friend''," the everlasting hit "''Thousands of Songs''" elevated her status in the legendary mega pop stars heavy industry including Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui and Alan Tam. This best-selling album of 1989 also recorded hits like "Night Flight" and "''Dancing Boy''."

During her academic career, she returned to Hong Kong and recorded three albums from 1992-1994 during the summer vacations. The song "''Snowfall''" was very popular for karaoke at the time; other hits included "''Red Tea Shop''" , which was voted among the Top 10 song of the Year in 1992, "''Come Back!''" , and "Jealousy." The album sales were surprisingly good despite the fact that she spent most of the time in the U.S. with minimum publicity.

By 1995, Priscilla has returned to the music industry in full force. Her initial return brought her back to the top of the pop chart with two albums: "''Welcome Back''" and "''I'm Not Lonely''" . In fact, "''Welcome Back''" topped the sales chart for a modern record of six weeks! Songs like "''It's Always Raining Tonight''" , "''Missing You''" , "''Missing Love and Dust''" , "''I'm Lonely''" , and "Flow" became instant classic. Her 10-night series of concerts in 1996 reaffirmed her popularity with the public. Another concert in 1997 with Hong Kong Philharmonic Symphony in Hong Kong made her the second pop artist ever to work with the HKPS.

With the signing of a new recording company, , her fame started to fall. The death of her beloved cat, Remington, in 1998 marked the start of three year period when she found life difficult as the new recording company wasn't working well for her. In 2000, after the last album with Cinepoly named "''Good For You''" , she retreated the music scene until 2003 when she made a come-back with an album named "''Loving Knot''" and a series of concert in Hong Kong. However, due to the album sales that's below her expectation, mostly because of illegal online downloading and piracy, she decided to retreat once again. She criticized the trend of Cantopop audiences, of whom she believed was only interested in admiring the entertainers' image and not appreciating their music. However, she has reiterated her desire to continue singing as many loyal fans still remained around the world.

In 2007, Priscilla has signed IEC - EC Music and plans to release a new album and a series of concerts in Hong Kong in 2008.

Personal life

Her personal life was closely scrutinized by the Hong Kong press, who even went to great lengths to search the garbage of her family's home. She simply was not the press' favorite as the Hong Kong tabloids often report negative news of hers for no apparent reason. Since 2003, she has not been particularly active, preferring to appear on TVB or Mainland television programmes and singing in overseas concerts; sometimes she'd attend some private events in Hong Kong as well. But in 2007, she started to be active again as she prepared for a new album and new concert.

Many in Hong Kong believed she made a wrong decision to leave the music industry at the peak of her career for college in 1989. In a radio interview, Priscilla disagreed. She considered singing was an important part of her, but she valued education more. Furthermore, she reiterated the reason for getting a college degree was to fulfill her promise to her parents. Her integrity remains to be something that youngsters can look up to.

Her love life is in great interest of the media as well. She has had three boyfriends over the course of her adult life. First was with her music producer Michael Au in the 1980s, but they ended their relationship before her return to Hong Kong in 1995. . After Au, Priscilla dated an artist/designer Michael Cheung, and that relationship ended in 2001. Finally, the latest boyfriend was Dr. Tony Tse, however, both agreed to end the 5-year relationship in July 2007. The cause of the break-up, according to Priscilla, is personality differences.
